USC is seeking an experienced Groundskeeper for the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Sports Arena.*

Home to the University of Southern California Trojans football team, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum & Sports Arena combines the traditional and the modern into a premier athletic environment and events venue. Designated as a national and state historical Landmark in 1984, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum boasts a long and noted past. Additionally, recognized as one of the most famous sports monuments in America today, the fabled history of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum spans nine decades and is the only facility in the world to have hosted two Olympiads, two Super Bowls, and a World Series.

This position maintains all Coliseum playing surface turf and facilities landscaped areas, including small decorative plants, grass areas, and trees and is responsible for turf and grounds management, including lining, marking, striping, and painting the competition field for play but also turf maintenance and fertilization. The Field and Grounds Supervisor prepares field and stadium areas for intercollegiate and sports activities and is responsible for the upkeep and management of a “world class” natural turf playing surface. This position also performs annual, bi-annual, and on-demand maintenance program for the competition field and adjacent landscaped areas of the facilities, executes seeding, topdressing, aeration, verticutting, mowing, and replacement of competition field.

Job Accountabilities:

  • Maintains condition and appearance of all athletic fields and facility landscaped areas to include decorative plants, grass areas, and trees.
  • Manages irrigation schedules and repairs as well as turf wear management. Tarp handling and weather situations.
  • Applies properly, all fertilizer mixtures and calibrations to efficiently apply fertilizers/fungicides/insecticides.
  • Executes routine and preventative maintenance on competition field and all landscaped areas of the facilities.
  • Prepares fields and stadiums for intercollegiate sports activities, by lining, marking, turf maintenance and fertilization.
  • Uses and maintains power tools and other equipment.
  • Prepares soil for planting.
  • Sweeps walkways and otherwise maintains paved areas.
  • Trains other athletic fields groundskeepers as required.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture/Turf Grass Sciences/or related field is preferred.

Two years of relevant industry experience is preferred.

Minimum Field of Expertise:

Understanding and working knowledge of the requirements of a “world class” natural turf playing surface for athletic competitions including football, soccer, and/or lacrosse. Basic knowledge of field sports, gardening, and ground maintenance. Demonstrated use of tools and equipment (including power tools and motorized machinery). Minimal familiarity with common plant species, landscaping, and cultivation. Understanding of/and implementation of proper field protective cover and recovery after field cover.

No set schedule. May have to work weekends, evenings and/or holidays.

USC is seeking an experienced Change Over and Event Staff Crewman for the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Sports Arena.*

This position serves as facility operations representative for pre/during/and post events as necessary. Organizes and orchestrates flow of warehouse and related equipment inventory. Serves as an event/changeover staff who will move, pickup, deliver, and/or install equipment, furniture, and other materials as assigned/dictated by the event. Hang banners, signage, and drapery as needed. Assists with facility and event projects. Execute all event set-up and break-down based on event schedule. Assists with the execution of large scale and smaller facility events including athletic competitions, concerts, and community events. Assists with crowd management, ensures public safety, and demonstrates first class customer service. Responsible for inventory and disbursement small facility/event needs such as lighting, barricades, tables and chairs, and other event materials.

Job Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for moving, picking up, and/or delivering equipment, supplies, and other materials related to events. Installs furniture and objects such as framed art on walls. Delivers and installs rental equipment.
  • Facilitates warehouse equipment movement and event setup/teardown.
  • Assists with supervising the work of temporary labor staff
  • Help with the construction of event staging, seating risers, event risers, and other event materials. 
  • Repairs custom equipment as needed. Serves as facility contact to adjust setups, monitor and deliver on-demand event changes and ensure facility is properly set for events.
  • Facilitates small facility improvement projects including minor carpentry, painting, landscaping, lighting, mechanical, and/or plumbing as dictated by event load.
  • Provide excellent customer service by assisting patrons in any way possible and ensuring they have a great experience at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Sports Arena.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma and 1 year of industry relevant experience or Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, Event Management, or other related fields and a year of industry relevant experience.
  • Understanding and working knowledge of large venue, facility, or public assembly building operations and maintenance.
  • Experience in the setup, execution, and teardown of events is preferred.
  • Ability to lift at least 50lbs.
  • Some experience in the operation of light duty machinery (forklift, scissor lift, pallet jacks) is preferred.
  • Strong, professional communication skills.
  • Basic computer knowledge (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to work independently and in a team, prioritize and meet strict deadlines.

  • Pay Rate: $13-$15/hour based on experience
